Middle School

6th grade:

Sixth graders are busily preparing for all sections of the upcoming Ohio Proficiency Test, which they will take in mid-March. They are practicing different styles of writing in Language Arts class, as well as reviewing the steps in the writing process: brainstorming, drafting, revising & editing, and writing a final draft. In Reading, the students are listening to The Giver, by Lois Lowry being read aloud by Miss Jacob. They are using this book to start off a unit on Science Fiction and Fantasy writing, and will discuss the book as they listen to it. Later in the quarter, the students will have choices of several other Fantasy/Sci-Fi books, which they will read with a group of classmates. In health, students are finishing a unit on the Immune System, and are continuing to review ways to stay healthy as they study prescription and over the counter medications. That study will lead them to a study of the ways drugs are misused and abused, and they will study a variety of different types of drugs and the effects they have on the body and mind, as well as on relationships.

7th grade:

In seventh grade, students are hard at work on several projects in Language Arts. They are working in groups to produce presentations about CSIA, which will show off all of the wonderful things about our school. Their presentations (a brochure, a slide show, and a Hyperstudio stack) will be ready soon! They are also working independently on some creative writing, centering around a volcano. The Newsletter is getting better each month as students perfect their skills as interviewers, writers, researchers and editors. In Reading, students are now reading novels with a partner, testing time-management skills to complete assignments on time, reading out loud in class, and producing a final project showing off what they learned from their novel. Like 6th graders, the 7th grade will focus soon on a unit in Health about alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. They are learning about such drugs now, and will then complete a research project about some famous people and their problems with drugs and/or alcohol.

8th grade:

The countdown to graduation has begun! The 8th grade class is busy preparing and fund-raising for their class trip in the spring. They will be taking a historical and educational (and fun!) tour of some of the big cities around Ohio. In class, they are doing author studies in Language Arts, and will then produce a Hyperstudio presentation about the author, three books the student read by that author, and their conclusions about the author's writing style, similarities in topic, etc. They are also learning about the Ohio Proficiency Test, since they will take the 9th grade Test in early March. In Language Arts, they are also using the book Grammar Smart Junior to cover some basic grammar concepts, practicing many types of writing, and polishing the skills they've been practicing here for 9 years!
