Columbus City School Pre-K Program Receives Mark of Excellence
Columbus City Schools Department of Early Childhood Education’s pre-kindergarten programs were recently recognized and awarded accreditation through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
Three of the primary accreditation standards on which programs are evaluated by
NAEYC are:
- Implementing a curriculum that fosters all areas of child development: cognitive, emotional, language, physical and social;
- Using developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate and effective teaching approaches; and
- Providing ongoing assessments of a child’s learning and development and communicating the child’s progress to the family.
Through its national voluntary accreditation system, NAEYC seeks to help families identify high-quality programs in their geographic area. |

PRE-KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION/ENROLLMENT
Registration begins each year during the month of May, which is Pre-Kindergarten Round-Up Month (May 1-31).
- To be eligible for Pre-K your child must be 4 years old by September 30th, and the parent/guardian must reside in the Columbus Public School district.
- Applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis, with first priority given to those who live in the attendance area of the school offering Pre-K.
- Those living outside the attendance area will be placed on a waiting list until the Tuesday after Labor Day. After that date placement will be made only if space allows.
- Because the demand for Pre-Kindergarten is so great, students who live outside the Columbus Public School District will NOT be considered for enrollment.
- Pre-Kindergarten students who are enrolled in alternative schools are not guaranteed a spot in the kindergarten program the following year. Parents must go through the lottery process for a kindergarten placement.
- Tuition is charged on a sliding fee scale.
- To register your child please bring with you to the school:
-birth certificate
-social security card
-proof of residency (utility bill)
-shot record
-proof of income
-recent physical and dental record |
All required paperwork must be completed before a child attends the program. If the paperwork is not complete, placement will be given to the next child on the waiting list.
Mobility is a factor in our schools and families move from time to time. When this occurs and the Pre-K child moves out of one Pre-K attendance area to another Pre-K attendance area, he/she is given a Pre-K placement in the new attendance area if space allows. If the new school is full and no vacancy exists, the child’s name will be placed first on the waiting list.
