News and Events
The Nubian Step-Team is a group consisting of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students at the Columbus Africentric School. The Step-Team's mission is to "edutain", meaning entertaining our audience with fascination steps while educating them about our great African culture and heritage.
The Nubian
Step-Team
The Nubian Step-Team was the first such group in the Columbus Public Schools, and was formed on February 2, 1999 by three teachers at the school: Amara Eddings of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Ron Hatton of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and Mike Owens of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Donnell Drake of Alpha Phi Alpha is an addition to the advisory team during the 1999 - 2000 school year.

The 1999 - 2000 Nubian Step-Team members shown to the left were the opening act at the Ohio State University's Step Competition in May, 2000.

Students in the front row are showing the team's Adinkra symbol, "Duno", representing Unity and Rhythm.

The four advisors have assisted the students in creating innovative and intricate steps that are reflective of the students and their rich heritage. The Step-Team also partakes in fund-raisers for the school while maintaining a 2.5 G.P.A. and serving as role models for all students at the Columbus Africentric School. The team has performed in various locations throughout the Columbus Metropolitan area, which includes various Columbus Public Schools, the Columbus Metropolitan Library, Franklin County Children Services, and the Ohio State University, as well as abroad in Parkersburg, West Virginia.
The Nubian Step-Team is more than just an after school organization but an entity of trend-setters that have established a means for young people to express themselves all thoughout the Columbus area.
Photographs and more news from the Nubian Step-Team will follow. Stay tuned!

A recent Middle School Honor Assembly provided public recognition for those students who have achieved high grade point averages through their efforts.

Many Middle School students are active in the School's choir, and recently performed for the entire school and many guests at the Knowledge of Self Tour Assembly. (See the Events link off the CAS home page for more information on that program.)

Still other middle school students have been gearing up for the spring track season - and still have happy memories from the track season last spring! Plan to come to a meet this year to cheer the athletes on!
