More than 2,700 sixth-grade students from throughout Columbus City Schools (CCS) participated in an educational pep rally and baseball game at The Ohio State University, Tuesday, May 12, 2009.
“The whole day was designed to motivate students to ‘reach higher’ and realize that college is an attainable goal for their future,” said Superintendent Harris, adding: “It is always advantageous to expose students to college life as early as possible.”
Now in its fifth year, CCS Baseball Day's intent is to show students the opportunities available and advantages of higher education, as well as the importance of staying in school.
The sixth-graders, who met a an attendance criteria set previously by their schools, were welcomed to campus by the Ohio State cheerleaders, mascot Brutus Buckeye and members of the Ohio State Athletic band. Representatives from Columbus State University conducted math magician “brain games” and similarly, representatives from COSI conducted compelling, interactive science experiments.
The educational pep rally will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Jerome Schottenstein Center, 555 Borror Drive, followed by lunch and the baseball match up between The OSU Buckeyes (5) vs. Eastern Michigan University (9) inside the Bill Davis Baseball Stadium, 650 Borror Drive.
