A. G. Bell School is the preschool and kindergarten center for the Columbus Public Schools Hearing Impaired Program (CHIP). We serve young children who are hearing impaired from Central Ohio. A small group of hearing children serve as peers and include siblings of CHIP students, children of staff, and friends of CHIP. CHIP faculty and staff seek to serve all children equally without regard to race, creed, or national origin.

The purpose of the CHIP preschool and Kindergarten is to provide an atmosphere where diagnostics and instruction can take place simultaneously. Professional diagnosticians work closely with teachers and parents to establish learning goals for each child. Evaluating progress and adjusting instruction when necessary is an on-going process. Parent involvement is crucial to decision-making. All operations of A. G. Bell School conform to the guidelines set by the Ohio Preschool Law.

Students who are three years of age may be eligible to participate in a full day preschool program, if that is determined to be the most appropriate for the child. Class sizes do not exceed eight hearing impaired students per class. Licensed Speech/ Language pathologists provide speech therapy services in addition to  the classroom teacher's speech instruction. Classroom communication options are available that emphasize the oral/aural and total communication approaches.

The Columbus Hearing Impaired Program is another example of excellence in the Columbus Public Schools.
